The importance of recreational opportunities is not an afterthought at River Islands, but rather a critical planning factor. Through a successful partnership between O’Dell Engineering, a Westwood company and River Islands Development, we are building an active community by planning for success in this revolutionary development. Our team designed a comprehensive Parks Master Plan that includes over 45 park and open space areas for Phases 1 & 2 of this 4,905 acre master planned community in Lathrop, CA.
To date, O’Dell Engineering, a Westwood company has provided visioning and conceptual design services through final construction administration for 5 neighborhood parks identified in the Parks Master Plan (Michael Vega Park, Somerston Park, Crystal Cove Park, Summer House Park, and Tidewater Park). Michael Vega Park was River Islands’ first recreational facility and includes opportunities for multi-generational activities within flexible arrival plazas, a large great lawn, playgrounds, seating along the water, and a picnic grove. Somerston Park is a 2 acre facility that includes passive areas near Crystal Lake, active play areas, a playground, picnic areas, and a shade structure. Crystal Cove Park is 3.3 acre facility with a softball field, bleachers, a basketball court, large and small dog parks, and a shade structure. Summer House Park is 2.1 acre park with a shade structure and a Frisbee golf course. Tidewater Park is a 2 acre facility with free play areas, a basketball court, a shade structure, a playground, and pedestrian access to Lake Somerston.
Two community parks are also under development, Champion Field Community Park and Town Center Community Park. Champion Field Community Park is a master planned park that includes a parking lot, an inclusive playground, a hill slide, soccer field space, batting cages, a bullpen, a t-ball field, a baseball field, a little league baseball/softball field, bleachers, a walking path, a picnic area with shade sails, restrooms, concessions, a storage building, bio-filtration area, signage, landscaping, and irrigation. Town Center Community Park is a 14-acre master planned park that includes a splash pad, hill slides, half-court basketball, tennis courts, a fitness station loop, a pollinator garden, an ADA walking path, shade structures with picnic seating and BBQs, restrooms, benches, bike racks, drinking fountains, landscaping, and irrigation.
