This neighborhood park renovation of an old storm water retention basin included the addition of a large playground area with multiple play structures, picnic facilities, a basketball court, trap fencing, additional grass open space, and site lighting. The playground and additional amenities were thoughtfully prepared with socially inclusive principals as a core design strategy. Sensory stimulation, integration, and developmental needs for often overlooked sensory systems such as the vestibular, proprioceptive, and interoceptive receptors were key to this project design. The design team assisted the City with grant efforts and ultimately succeeded in securing a matching grant from the State in order to build this park. Socially inclusive principals were also integrated into the space and have been extremely successful as evidenced by children working together and playing together to accomplish playful goals together.
