The O’Dell Engineering Survey Team has just completed a utility site walk for the Gilroy Water Mains Survey. As part of the utility site walk the survey team identified and took photos of utility features along Highway 152 and Swanston Avenue in the City of Gilroy. The type of utility features identified included water meter boxes, water valves, gas valves, electrical vaults, communications manholes, sewer manholes, and storm drain manholes. Over 2,000 photos of the project site were taken, and data on several hundred individual utility features were collected using a mobile GIS application built on the open source framework Open Data Kit. The data collected on the utility site walk will be used by the O’Dell Engineering Survey Team to properly identify utility features extracted from the point cloud created for the project from over 130 individual terrestrial laser scans.
