Assemblywoman Susan Eggman Introduces Bill to Save Farmland
On Monday, February 24, 2014 the Stockton Record Newspaper reported that California Assemblywoman Susan Eggman had introduced a new legislative bill to help save Central Valley Farmland. AB1961 is entitled “The Farmland Strategy Act”. It requires that California Counties with large farmland resources to inventory their agricultural lands, describe their goals to preserve farmland, and to mitigate for its loss. This data would need to be published on the County web sites.
According to the article, AB1961 replaces and earlier bill by Susan Eggman, AB823, that died because of opposition by the California Chamber of Commerce. AB823 would have required that every acre of farmland developed be offset by an acre of farmland preserved for future farming.
