February 10, 2014
On January 23, 2014 the Modesto Bee Newspaper reported the University of California Board of Regents had voted to preserve over 6,500 acres of grassland on the north and east side of the UC Merced Campus. The article indicated the grassland is unique for its vernal pools. The land is already used by university students for research. Funding for maintenance of the reserve will be based in part from money that comes from UC Merced and in part from money provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The article also said that students and professors from other parts of the UC system may come to the reserve to study grasslands, soils, vernal pools, and endangered species.
